Berny Martin grew up in Haiti, where his grandmother placed a pair of scissors in his hands and showed him that cloth could become something. She was the first person to believe in what he might make. His first completed design was a pair of jeans. He was still a child.

The instinct never left him. Years later, in New York, he formalized it — enrolling at the Fashion Institute of Technology after leaving behind a tech career that made sense on paper but nothing else. In 2005, he launched LeCatou, named for the grandmother who started it all.
